Istanbul Police Department has begun taking excessive measures to prevent 1 May demonstrations in Taksim, following the statement of Istanbul governor who said they would not allow demos to mark the International Worker's Day in Taksim. The Police Department announced that it will station 10.000 police force in and around Taksim Square to bar the groups entering the area on 1 May.
Taksim square will be cordoned off with iron barricades as well as the police standing guard around the barricades and the square. Besides, all the meeting points and routes leading to Taksim, İstiklal Avenue, Tarlabaşı Boulevard, Mete Street, Gümüşsuyu, Sıraselviler, Divan Kavşağı, DİSK building in Şişli, Beşiktaş Square and Dolmabahçe will be blockaded by armoured vehicles, water cannons (TOMA) and the police force.
While an emergency situation in Istanbul has been declared with the decision of the police department, more policemen will be brought to Istanbul from other cities. Moreover, helicopters will be recording video the whole day and transferring them immediately to the MOBESE (mobile electronic system integration) centre. Anti-terror teams will be deployed also in the surrounding neighborhoods of Okmeydanı, Dolapdere and others known with their leftist and Alevi population Gazi Mahallesi, Gülsuyu and Sancaktepe.
Metro lines between Yenikapı-Haciosman will be closed between Osmanbey and Şişhane stops, while the line between Kabataş and Taksim will also be out of service during 1 May.
