Syrian Democratic Forces Cross Over The Euphrates And Turkey's 'Red Line'

26th December 2015

ANF - Kobane

The Syrian Democratic Forces (QSD), which includes the YPG, have crossed over to the western side of the Tishrin Dam they liberated earlier today.

Fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (QSD) who are continuing the operation in southern Kobanê reached Tishrin Dam early this morning. After encircling the dam and its surroundings, QSD fighters took control of the dam following clashes with ISIS gangs in this area.

As the offensive in the area continues, QSD combatants have reached the western bank of the dam where clearing operations continue.

The area of Tishrin, which belongs to the Manbij town of Aleppo, is located 115 km to Aleppo; 80 km to Serxet border (with Turkey); and 70 km southwest of Kobanê.

Turkey and its president Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared this area as a 'red-line' not to be crossed by Kurdish and democratic forces, because it is the only crossing over point for ISIS fighters between Turkey and Syria. The path from Manbij is also one of the supply lines to ISIS' main base, Raqqa.

Commentators also say the Turkish administration fears the joining of Rojava's (Northern Syria) three cantons: Cizire, Kobane and Afrin, which will create a Kurdish dominated autonomous region on Turkey's border.
