Kurdish man gets 18 month prison sentence for praising YPG fighters' moustaches

A man living in in Turkey's Kurdish southeast Van province has been sentenced to 18 months and 22 days in prison for praising Peoples' Protection Units (YPG) fighters' moustaches.

Mehmet Ali Bora shared images of YPG fighters at the height of the Kobanê resistance against ISIS attacks, writing “I would give my life for your moustaches”.

An investigation was launched by Van Chief Prosecutor against Bora for “spreading propaganda for a terrorist organisation,” and the man was sentenced to 18 months and 22 days in prison by Van 4th Heavy Penal Court which cited praising the moustaches of YPG fighters as “terrorist propaganda”.

Mehmet Ali Bora strongly criticised the court verdict and said he would appeal against it.
