Erdogan's colonialist rhetoric against Rojava: 'They are ignorant and cannot form government'

Speaking at the Atlantic Council Summit on Friday, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, called the Kurds in Rojava "ignorant" and said his country would not allow for an autonomous region.

"There is a proverb: the ignorant are courageous. This is how they [Rojava's officials] are. They are forming governments and such. We won't allow this."

Overlooking the fact that the Turkish army has been shelling Rojava's Afrin and other regions for more than a year, Erdogan went on to say that they would defend themselves against the response from the YPG since the Turkish airstrikes on Karachok, which killed 18 YPG-YPJ members.

"We will not allow for a terrorist corridor to be formed. There are ignorant people who are trying to form a state in northern Syria. There is a proverb: the ignorant are courageous... They are forming governments and such. We will not allow this. We will not remain silent. We are against the partitioning of Syria," Erdogan said.

The Turkish president also said he believes Ankara will turn a new page with the Trump administration and strengthen ties.
