Kurdish hunger strikes in Turkey's prisons: facts and figures

The hunger strike launched by 13 Kurdish prisoners In Turkey’s prisons on 15th February has entered its 56th day and been joined by another 174 inmates.

The protest is for an indefinite period of time and irreversible, meaning it will continue until demands are met and may lead to deaths. Prisoners are demanding an end to the isolation imposed on Kurdish PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, an end to rights violations in prisons, rights violations during the State of Emergency and the blockade and war on Kurdish cities.

As the inital protestors entered the 'danger threshold' the hunger strike continues spreading across prisons and also outside within society.

Hundreds of people within and outside prisons have launched 5 day rotational hunger strikes in solidarity with the prisoners. The families of prisoners on strike have also started a hunger strike in Kurdish capital Diyarbakir and called for public opinion to take action.

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) lawmakers Pervin Buldan and Sirri Sureyya Onder met with Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag on 7th March and informed of the health conditions, rights violations and demands of prisoners. According to a statement by the HDP the minister listened to suggestions and said they would take action against rights violations.
