The co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD), Ilham Ehmed, has said that Russia and the Syrian regime are trying to turn the military outcome in Aleppo into political gains.
Speaking to ANF regarding the trilateral summit held by Russia, Turkey and Iran in Moscow on December 20 to discuss Syria, Ehmed evaluated the summit as a one-sided assembly of forces that does not include the opposition in Syria.
Ehmed also said Turkey was directly responsible for the murder of the Russian ambassador in Ankara.
Murder of Russian Ambassador
Regarding the assassination of the Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov in Ankara on the eve of the summit in Moscow, Ehmed said: "This murder is directly an assassination by the AKP as the assassin has a background in the Osmanlı Ocakları (Ottoman Hearths), which was founded by Erdogan. This assassination shows the true face of the AKP. The ambassador was killed at a time when preparations were completed for the Moscow summit to handle Aleppo."
Turkey has to switch to the Russian front
The MSD co-chair noted that Turkey has now abandoned all its previous policies on Syria and is at the point of acting together with Russia.
“Russia has turned the assassination into an advantage. This is because Turkey had no choice left but to fully surrender to Russia while it attended the meeting with such an incident. Turkey has given up on its Syria policy and completely switched to the Russian front after this assassination.”
Aleppo and al-Bab
Ehmed also said that the Ba’ath regime had declared victory in Aleppo after the summit, during which - she said - a plan about how to continue after Aleppo was discussed.
Remarking that al Bab had been left to Turkey, Ehmed added: “Turkey tries to take its revenge in Bab, and to prevent the unification of our cantons. Turkish troops have carried out intensified attacks on Bab recently. Essentially, the Turkish state is committing civilian massacres in Bab. Dozens of civilians that include children have been massacred by the recent Turkish attacks. This is the reality of the Turkish state which has once again resorted to a massacre of civilians - as it does everywhere - after it had no influence left on the determination of the future of Syria.
Summit is one sided and cannot offer a solution
The co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council defined the Moscow summit and the preparation for the meeting to be held in Astana next month a one-sided affair, adding: “This meeting with Iran, Russia and Turkey will be without the opposition. It is a summit organised by the parties that strengthen the Syrian regime’s hand. This is why it is not a meeting whose outcomes can offer a solution to the problems in Syria.
These forces started operations before the meeting to turn military outcomes into political ones. These are moves made before negotiations. In other words, they want to make it clear which forces will be negotiated with now that there is no opposition left. It seems the states that are most involved in the internal affairs of Syria will reach an agreement and declare that they have come up with a solution.”
Ehmed also said that an amnesty is being considered for "so called opposition groups, who have been in Turkey for years."
The opposition co-chair ended the interview by saying that a true and lasting solution in Syria could only be reached if all parties were involved in bringing about a solution.
The Syrian Democratic Council (مجلس سوريا الديمقراطية (Arabic), MSD) is the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces. Both umbrella-organisations have been created from the background and context of the de facto autonomous Federation of Northern Syria – Rojava. They are working towards the implementation of a secular, democratic and federalist system for all of Syria.
