Crackdown in Turkey Threatens a Haven of Gender Equality Built by Kurds: NYT

An opinion piece entitled "Crackdown in Turkey Threatens a Haven of Gender Equality Built by Kurds," by Rod Nordland was published in yesterday's edition of the New York Times.

The article looks at the impact of the Kurdish Movement's -especially the Kurdistan Workers Party's (PKK) struggle- and its impact on Kurdish women and the roles they have taken up in all spheres of society.

Not shying away from the more controversial -for some- aspects of the Kurdish struggle, such as the impact of the armed struggle waged by women within the PKK and its affects on civil society at large, and Abdullah Ocalan's ideological efforts, the article makes connections between the different areas of struggle that most western writers have chosen to overlook.

The article also correctly identifies that the AKP government's current crackdown on Kurdish politics is also an attack on the struggle for gender equality and women's liberation, something that many female Peoples' Democratic Party deputies have also been saying.
