HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtas Held With Al-Qaeda Convicts

It has emerged that the co-chair of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtas is being kept in the same block as Al-Qaeda convicts and dangerous criminals.

Demirtas, who was detained on 4 November, on charges of being a member of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), has been imprisoned in solitary confinement in the C Block of Edirne Maximum Security Prison, rather than in Blocks A or B, where political prisoners are held.

HDP Hakkari MP Abdullah is also being held in the same block according to reports. Both men are being taunted with 'Takbeer's and racist slogans according to their lawyers.

Demirtas and Zeydan are also forced to pass by the cells of Al-Qaeda convicts when they are taken from their cells for lawyers' visits or visitations.

According to reports Demirtas and Zeydan have appealed to the prison administration for transfer to Blocks A or B. The prison administration has responded saying they are “awaiting a reply from the Ministry of Justice, with an arrangement made according to the outcome”.

Fears were raised recently about the wellbeing of prisoners after Justice and Development Party (AKP) Izmir MP Huseyin Kocabiyik’s tweeted:

"In case of an assassination attempt against statesmen, the people will storm the prisons and hang all PKK and FETÖ members, this is what the people are talking about."

Recent discussions about the reinstatement of capital punishment in Turkey by President Tayyip Erdogan and opposition leader Devlet Bahceli have strained ties with the EU as well within society.
