Turkish Supreme Court Approves Prison Sentence for HDP Co-Leader Yuksekdag

The Turkish Supreme Court has approved the 10-month prison sentence given by a local court to left-wing pro-autonomy Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Figen Yuksekdag.

Yuksekdag was sentence to a 10-month prison sentence for participating in the funeral of Yasemin Ciftci, a militant of the outlawed Marxist Leninist Communist Party (MLKP) in 2012. The HDP co-chair rejected the accusation of terrorist propaganda and said she had attended the funeral because Ciftci was a socialist.

At the time, the Yuksekdag was the leader of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) and was tried with 7 others.

Yuksekdag's lawyer Sevil Araci Bek commented on the decision and said, "The supreme court has approved the sentence but has not yet relayed the decision to the local court. After this happens the court will write to the prosecutors office requesting for an arrest. Normally there is no prison time for a 10-month sentence, but because it's a terror-related offence, there is a 7.5 month prison time."

The arrest of HDP officials began in September with the party's deputy co-chair Alp Altinors being jailed for participating in the funeral of Zakir Karabulut, who was killed alongside 102 people in Ankara in an IS suicide bomb attack in October 2015.

In the past year dozens of officials of the HDP's sister party the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) have been arrested and imprisoned on terror charges.

There are fears in Kurdish circles that arrest of MPs and the HDP's leaders will escalate the war in the country.
