Mayors of Diyarbakir Detained in Ongoing Purge of Kurdish Politics

The co-mayors of Diyarbakir (Amed), Gultan Kisanak and Firat Anli, have been detained as part of a terror probe in Turkey's Kurdish region.

Gultan Kisanak was held at the local airport in Diyarbakir, while Firat Anli was taken into custody at his home late tonight.

Protests have been held in several cities across Turkey against the detainments.

The detainments come following the sacking of more than two dozen Kurdish Democratic Regions Party (DBP) mayors in August. The mayors were replaced by government appointed trustees, with the government using decree laws which by-pass Parliament.

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to prosecute Kurdish officials who he accuses of having links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Almost 2,500 DBP officials and members have been arrested and imprisoned in the last year.
