'We Won't Recognise Appointed Trustees': Kurdish Political Parties

Pro-autonomy Democratic Regions Party (DBP) and Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) have said they will not recognise the trustees appointed to take over DBP and HDP municipalities in Turkey's Kurdish region.

In an official statement the DBP said: "The AKP government is adding a new page to its dirty war policies in Kurdistan every day. Due to these policies of destruction and massacre many cities in Kurdistan have been wiped off the map. The AKP has engaged in all sorts of illegality to place our municipalities under administration. There is only one reason for the AKP's attacks on our gains; and that is its desperation against our resistance. We would like to reiterate that we are not going to remain silent against the attacks on our people's gains. Placing our municipalities under the control of trustees is extortion and a coup against the will of the people. Everyone must raise their voices against this seizure and coup."

HDP Adana MP and lawyer Meral Danış Beştaş criticised the development and described municipalities as one of the major areas that reflect the people's will. "If the government ignores the people's will, then people will defend their own rights and laws. This is an unacceptable practice," she said.

28 municipalities have been placed under administration with trustees being appointed for Diyarbakir's Sur and Silvan districts today.

Hundreds of DBP and HDP co-mayors and executives have been imprisoned, including DBP co-chair Kamuran Yüksek.
