Violent Clashes in Kurdish District Nusaybin, Turkish State Forces Plundering Houses

Violent clashes between Turkish state forces and the Kurdish milita YPS continued throughout yesterday night and into today in Mardin's beleaguered Nusaybin district.

Fighting entered the 55th consecutive day today with the district remaining under heavy bombardment.

Intense clashes between Civil Defence/Protection Units (YPS) and Gendarme and Police Special Teams (JÖH/PÖH) are occurring in the Abdulkadirpaşa, Zeynelabidin, Kışla, Fırat, Dicle and Yenişehir neighbourhoods, which are being protected by the YPS and YPS-JIN (Women's Units) as areas of Kurdish self-rule.

Reports suggest that Turkish military and police forces, unable to progress into the protected neighbourhoods, have started attacking the town center.

Workplaces in the Smugglers' Market (Kaçakçılar Çarşısı) are being closed down and pillaged by state forces that are also breaking into some houses in the same area and plundering goods.

Enhanced military deployment by state forces has been ongoing since early this morning.

Footage shot by journalists from across the border in Rojava-Northern Syria shows that many houses in the neighbourhoods under bombardment have turned to rubble. Nusaybin has been described by some political commentators as being the 'final round' of fighting between Kurds fighting for autonomy and the Turkish state.

Thousands of civilians are still living in the area surrounding the neighbourhoods where fighting continues.
